S. Bernard Durbin, Jr., age 79 of Bedford, passed away on Friday, March 24, 2017 at his home. Born January 17, 1938 in Leitchfield, KY., he was the son of S. Bernard Sr. and Leona (Miller) Durbin. On October 31, 1959 in Hardin County, Kentucky, he married Wilma Mudd.
Bernie was retired from Sonoco Flexible Packaging in Edinburgh where he worked for over 40 years. He proudly served active duty in the U.S. Navy from 1955 to 1958 and the U.S. Navy Reserves until 1963. Bernie was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Moose Lodge and the Workers United Union Local 1490. He enjoyed golfing and loved and cared for several cats and dogs throughout his life. A proud moment for Bernie was when he crossed the Equator in June 1957.
Survivors include his daughters, Barbara (Joe) Hendrix of Franklin, IN and Connie (Steve) Kendall of Bellefontaine, OH; sons, Anthony (Velvet) Durbin of Sellersburg, IN, Eddie (Teresa) Durbin of Knifley, KY, David (Debbie) Durbin of Salem, IN and Paul (Ronda) Durbin of Trafalgar, IN; sister, Kathy Von Allman of Louisville. Bernie also leaves behind 20 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 55 years, Wilma; grandson, Isaac Durbin; great-grandsons, Maddox Durbin and Harley Hagan; 7 brothers and 4 sisters.
A military service will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, March 29, 2017 at the Indiana Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Madison. Memorials can be made through the funeral home to the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation or to the American Heart Association.
