Ronald Paul "Butch" Toburen, age 84, a beloved figure in the Spraytown community, departed this life on December 28, 2024, leaving behind a legacy woven from the bonds of friendship and family. Born on February 27, 1940, in Columbus, Indiana, Butch's journey through life was marked by his unwavering spirit and generous heart.
A proud graduate of Columbus High School, Class of 1958, Butch exemplified dedication—not only in his education but also in his commitment to serving his country as a member of the United States Army National Guard. His military service was not merely a duty; it was a testament to his character and the values he upheld, values he embedded deeply in his family.
Throughout his life, Butch was known for his open-heartedness; he would talk to anyone and never met a stranger. His gift for connection made him a cherished presence, adored by many. He had a unique ability to build friendships, always prioritizing the bonds he formed with others. His opinionated nature was endearing and revealing of his passion, as he worked diligently, serving as a wonderful provider for his family.
Butch's interests were as vibrant as his personality. He spent countless hours riding horses, relishing the freedom of the open pastures. With a love for the outdoors, his weekends often included camping adventures or toiling happily in his beloved garden—a sanctuary that nurtured not just plants, but the seeds of happiness, laughter, and life’s simple pleasures. Yet, it was his grandkids who were his world; they were his pride, filling his days with joy and purpose.
He leaves behind his beloved wife of 59 years, Diana Daab Toburen of Seymour, Indiana, who stood steadfastly by his side, and their three children: Brian Toburen and his wife Sondra of Columbus, Indiana; Jeff Toburen and his wife Kathy of Columbus, Indiana; and Angie Strain and her husband Dave of Bedford, Indiana. Butch was the proud grandfather of ten grandchildren: Quintin Zornes (Maddy), Mick Toburen, Cari Renner (Dustin), Samantha Haskins (Doug), Andrew Cunningham, Aaron Cunningham (Amanda), Chris Wagers, Amy Wagers, Matthew Strain (Jenny), and Jordan Strain—each carrying a piece of his spirit. He also adored his four great grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul Toburen and Mildred Kreinop Toburen, and his sister, Kathryn Taulman. The memories they created together will forever echo in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Butch's life will be celebrated during a visitation from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 PM, on January 3, 2025, at Christensen Family Funeral Home, 311 Holiday Square Road, Seymour, Indiana. He will be laid to rest at Spraytown Cemetery. As we gather to honor and remember Butch, let us also reflect on the profound impact he had on our lives, the friendships he formed, and the love he shared—a legacy that will forever remain in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him.
