Roger Alan Dixon, age 80 of Seymour, passed away on Saturday, December 1, 2018 at home. Born February 3, 1938 in Indianapolis, he was the son of the late Homer Luther Dixon and Vivian Jean (Huffman) Akers.
Roger graduated in 1956 from Medora High School and then joined the U.S. Air Force where he served for four years. During that time, he was a control tower specialist and served 17 months in Spain. After having an honorable discharge, he was an air traffic controller in Portland, Oregon for 2 years and then in Indianapolis. After that, he was a superintendent in several factories in Seymour and retired from Dura Automotive in Brownstown in 2000. He was an avid reader of history, war topics and U.S Presidents. He loved watching sports, especially IU Basketball. He also enjoyed going to the Indianapolis 500 and NASCAR races. Roger was also a self-taught organist and loved playing music.
On June 16, 1956 in Medora, Roger married Carolyn Sue Phillips. Together they had five children, Debra Melton who preceded him in death, Mark (Lori) Dixon of Seymour, Tamara Carter of Davenport, IA, Melanie (Brian) Foist and Michelle (Chris) Hensley both of Seymour; brother, Tommy (Lilly) Dixon of San Francisco, CA. Roger leaves behind 11 grandchildren, Angela (Frank) Dettloff, Kristina Sampson-Bess, Crystal (Corey) Blevins, Maggie (Max) Schafstall, Tara (Adam) Bickle, Jill Carter, Brandon (Candace) Foist, Tyler (Kay-Lynn) Foist, Joshua Roth, Trenton Hensley, and Paige Hensley. He also was blessed with 21 great-grandchildren, two of whom preceded him in death. Roger also had numerous cousins.
Services will be held at 2:00pm on Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at Woodlawn Life Celebration Centre conducted by Pastor Steve Barrett. Visitation will be from 11:00am until service time. Burial will follow services at the Chestnut Ridge Cemetery. Memorials can be made in Roger’s memory at the funeral home going to the Wounded Warrior Project to support veterans.
