Mary Lillian Scott, age 84 of Madison, passed away on Sunday, June 29th at The Waters of Clifty Falls. She was born near Versailles on Aug. 11, 1929 to the late John and Mildred Stevenson Hopper. She attended school at Versailles until the family moved to Scotts Ridge near Pleasant to the farm of her mother’s uncle, James Finley Ralston in March 1940. She continued her elementary education at the Canaan school and then attended the former Central High School on Rykers Ridge where she graduated in 1947. She married Julian R. Scott on Feb. 14, 1948 in Versailles and moved to the Scott farm on the China-Manville Road where she spent the rest of her life before moving to The Waters in Madison in 2012. He predeceased her April 25, 1985. She was a member of the Brushy Fork Baptist Church and later the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church before joining the Rykers Ridge Baptist church in the 1960s where she maintains her membership. She taught Sunday school for decades, starting at Mount Pleasant, teaching every age group from young children to senior citizens. She is survived by her son, Robert Scott, daughter-in-law, Irene Mendelson, and granddaughter, Elisa Scott, all of Lake Hiawatha, N.J., and one sister, Betty Miller, of Scotts Ridge, a sister-in-law, Thelma Scott Meier, of Madison, and a niece, Beverly Owen of the Manville area, who lovingly provided care to her to enable her to remain on the farm, and who continued that care when Mary moved to the Waters. She was preceded in death by her husband Julian; by her parents, by her sisters Nelda Hopper Chandler and Barbara Hopper, and brother Robert W. Hopper. Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 7th at 10:00am at the Woodlawn-Vail Funeral Chapel at 117 Holt Drive. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 6th from 2:00pm until 6:00pm. Burial will follow services on Monday at Rykers Ridge New Cemetery. Memorials can be given to Rykers Ridge Baptist Church through the funeral home.
