Margaret Carmichael passed away on Saturday, June 16, 2018 after a few months illness. She was ninety-one years old.
She was born in Marion County on December 11, 1926, the second daughter of Dave & Edna Spurgin Leonard. She attended Bunker Hill School near Southport, IN where her father was a truck farmer and where she and her older sister helped raise vegetables for the Southside market.
At a young age, she moved with her family to Brown County, IN where she attended a one room school at Storeyville, until upper grades and then she attended Van Buren (Christiansburg). There, she met her high school sweetheart, Russell Carmichael. They married in 1945 after graduation and were married for 71 years. After graduation, she worked in the office at V.E. Sprouse. After they were married, Margaret and Russell purchased a farm in Jackson County where they lived the entire 71 years of their marriage until their health would no longer allow them to work the farm. At that time, they moved to Brownstown.
Margaret had two brothers and two sisters all of whom are deceased. A sister, Mary Garloch, died at an early age so Margaret helped raise her two small sons.
Margaret always said the only talent the Lord gave her was to help people. She did that as long as her health permitted. She helped take people to the doctor or helped the elderly with their yard work. She was a member of Houston Christian Church and was currently attending Ratcliff Grove Christian Church.
She is survived by a son, Gary (Peggy) Carmichael, a daughter, Joy Soladine. She is also survived by four granddaughters; Cari (Mike) Boggs, Amy (Steve) Blair, Jody (Eric) Sellers, and Christie (Stacy) Blair, seven great grandchildren, one great great grandson, and two nephews that she and Russell raised, Larry Garloch and Randy Garloch.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one great grandson, two sisters and two brothers.
