Lt. Col. John Martin Robbins Jr., age 86, a native and resident of Scottsburg, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany, Indiana. He was born on October 9, 1937 to the late John Martin Robbins, Sr., and the late Goldie (Comer) Robbins. He was a lifelong faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church of Leota, a 1955 graduate of Scottsburg High School and graduated from Purdue in 1959 with a B.S. in Agronomy. John was a State Soil Scientist with the USDA. In 1955, John joined the Indiana Army National Guard and after 23 years of service, served for over 11 years in the Army Reserves, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. He will forever be remembered as a quiet man, easy going, strong willed and who was an amazing dad that loved his family dearly. John loved the outdoors and enjoyed fishing, deer hunting, camping and especially his dogs. John started and ran the Leota Christmas Tree Farm, complete with live Alaskan Reindeer. John loved to watch sports and was a huge Purdue fan and also enjoyed western movies, with John Wayne being among his favorites. John was a cancer survivor and was extremely blessed and grateful for the years that God gave him.
Paul said in 2 Timothy chapter 4, I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day: and not to me only, but unto all them also that love his appearing.
He is survived by his two daughters, Jennifer Sue Donnell of Scottsburg, Indiana and Lea Ann Callico and her husband Edward of Nabb, Indiana. Two brothers, Denny Robbins and his wife Pam of Kissimmee, Florida and Danny Robbins of Leota, Indiana. Two sisters, Deanna Trowbridge of Versailles, Indiana and Sharon Prall and her husband Thomas of Scottsburg, Indiana. Three grandchildren, Dejiah Callico, John Callico and Halie Callico. Three great grandchildren, Angelina Callico, Mateo Callico Lopez and Alessio Sabino Callico. One sister in law, Jean Robbins of Scottsburg, Indiana.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife of 62 years, Sharon (Koerner) Robbins and one brother, Kelley Robbins.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 27, 2024 from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM at Bethel Baptist Church of Leota with funeral services beginning at 11:00 AM. He will be laid to rest at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery with full military honors.
