Lonnie E. Root, age 52 of Freetown, passed away at 4:48pm at Schneck Medical Center. Born November 25, 1960, he was the son of Homer and Sarah (Neal) Root. On December 3, 1982, he married Anita McCory in Gallatin, TN. They were married for 30 wonderful years. Lonnie worked at Valeo Sylvania as a maintenance mechanic from 1979-2002. He attended Seymour First Nazarene church in Seymour. Lonnie loved the outdoors and was an avid deer hunter and fisherman. In deer hunting, he always enjoyed bow season as he would always comment that “anyone could kill one with a gun but it takes skill to kill one with a bow.” He played industrial league basketball in Seymour for Valeo Sylvania for several years as a point guard. In their era, they dominated the league. During this time, he also enjoyed playing for Valeo in their softball league. For several years, Lonnie also coached his two oldest daughters’ team in the Brownstown Girls Softball League and by many was considered a favorite coach. One favorite season, he coached what was thought to be the underdog team to an undefeated season and took the championship tourney undefeated as well. One of his most proud accomplishments was being able to build two houses for his family that became their home. Survivors include his wife Anita and three daughters, Brittani Cornett and her husband Keegan, Tiffani Keys and her husband Michael, and Jessica Root. Also surviving are six siblings, Bobby (Margaret) Root, June (Joe) Miller, Ray (Sue) Root, Jeanie Root, Gary (Roxanne) Root and Lisa Dunn; his mother in law, Phyllis Chasteen; brother in law, Jack “Buddy” (Lisa) McCory, Jr, sister in laws, Patty (Alan) Woodward, Penny (Jerry) Emily and Linda Sue Murphy. Lonnie also had several nieces and nephews. Lonnie was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Sarah Root, father in law Jack McCory Sr., step-father in law Marshall Chasteen, nephew Eric Schryer, sister in law Angela Grace McCory, and a step brother in law David Chasteen. A funeral service will be conducted by Steve Greene at 10:00am, Friday, June 7, 2013 at the Seymour First Nazarene Church at 311 Myers Street, Seymour. Visitation will be from 4:00pm until 8:00pm on Thursday at the church and from 9:00am until service time Friday at the church. Memorials can be made to the Schneck Foundation in honor of the home health care given to Lonnie over the past 10 years.
