John Raymond Boley

John Raymond Boley, who excelled sharing kindness, offering service and fostering joy for all, died July 5 2019 at Hickory Creek Nursing Home, Scottsburg Indiana at the age of 91. Raymond began his life’s journey as a fourth of ten children on November 27 1927 in Louisville, Kentucky, the son of master carpenter Clyde Commodore Boley and Henrietta Agnes Maurer Boley. This hard-working depression era family moved to a Lexington, Indiana farmstead in one of the northern most sections of the original George Rogers Clark land grant.After graduating from Lexington High School in 1947, he obtained a job at International Harvester in Louisville. He met Betty Jean McCammon of Sellersburg, Indiana through mutual friends and took her on dates in his $25 Model A with a rumble seat that he earned by laying rail tracks from Charleston to Blocher. The two were united in 1948 and honeymooned in Renfro Valley Kentucky after he had saved $1000 as promised.Raymond become an employee and jack of all trades for Betty’s family’s business, McCammon Prather Motor Company in Sellersburg, Indiana and after the eventual sale of the company he became general manager of Deifenbach’s International Harvester dealership in Sellersburg. He remained in sales for most of his life and used his passion of connecting with people throughout his retirement. He adored his role as a substitute school bus driver and drove tender trucks for his son at Crop Production because he knew most of the fields in the surrounding counties and loved being outdoors.Raymond and Betty moved to a Lexington farm in 1956 and raised their four children on 275 acres, setting a wonderful example of hard work and hospitality combined with church and community involvement.As a dedicated and life-long public servant, Raymond served locally as well as statewide. He was a devoted Democrat serving the community as Lexington Councilman and eventually serving several terms as Scott County Commissioner as well as Chairman of  Scott County Commissioners District Two, State President of the Indiana Commissioner’s Association where he was recognized as an outstanding County Commissioner and the Purdue Road School. Raymond joined the board of directors for the REMC, Federal Land Bank and Purdue University’s Council on Agricultural Research, Extension, and Teaching. Betty & Raymond were devoted supporters of the 4-H organization and were recognized by Purdue University and Scott County for their service.Beyond his service, Raymond was a beloved family member and friend who was always there to help. Raymond and Betty were active in attending events and traveled the United States visiting grandchildren and friends. Granddaughter Rayanne Boley James, shared this remembrance. “They showed me unconditional love. They were the kindest most welcoming warm people. They taught us the value and importance of family and invested all of their time and energy into their children and grandchildren.”He was devoted member of Scottsburg United Methodist Church, supporting the church on many committees, making the morning coffee and singing in the choir. His last Sunday morning was spent singing hymns with visiting church friends at the nursing home. Raymond was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Betty Jean McCammon Boley, his father, mother, two sisters, Helen Zunitch and Ida Mae Whitlatch, six brothers, William, James, Joseph, Charles, Clyde Jr. and Robert and one great grandchild (Daughter of Karoline and Jason Gantt).Raymond is survived by his youngest sister, Alice Boley Nichols (Melvin) of Lexington, four devoted children; Sandra Wildman of Madison, Devona Burns (Steven) and Dennis Boley (Jill) of Scottsburg, and Sharon Meneou (Tom) of Clarksville; nine grandchildren; Katie Wildman of Madison, IN, Karoline Burns Gantt (Jason) of Greenfield, IN, Kendrah Burns and Kimberly Burns of Scottsburg, Rayanne Boley James (A.J.) of Lynchburgh, VA, Kevin Meneou (Karen) of Mars, PA, T.J. Meneou (Lisa) of New Washington, IN, Scott Meneou and Lindsey Meneou of Clarksville, IN. And many great grandchildren.
