Joann Goins

August 29, 1936 — April 16, 2020

Joann (Royce) Goins, age 83, of Madison, passed away on Thursday, April 16, 2020 at Norton Hospital in Louisville, Kentucky.  She was born August 29, 1936 in Madison, the daughter of Walter E. and Helen M. (Holcraft) Royce.

She graduated from Madison High School on Broadway in 1954 and immediately began her long career as a bookkeeper in the grocery business at the Kroger store in Madison.  While living in Madison, she was a member of First Baptist Church and the Order of Eastern Star.

In 1967, she and her family moved to Saint Cloud, Florida, where she worked as a bookkeeper for A&P groceries in Saint Cloud and Kissimmee, Florida, and for the former Rife’s Market in Saint Cloud, retiring in 2006. While living in Saint Cloud, she held memberships in First Baptist Church, Saint Cloud United Methodist Church, and the Order of Eastern Star. She returned to live in Madison in 2013.

Often she could be found boarding an airplane, traveling to see her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, or to other parts of the country visiting friends.  She was a seamstress, and enjoyed crocheting, cross-stitch, quilting and making ceramics.  She also enjoyed reading, walking, watching her Hummingbirds, and singing in the church choir.

Survivors include three sons:  Ken Goins and his wife, Carla of Madison, Ron Goins and his wife, Jenny of Orlando, Florida, and Michael Goins of Lynchburg, Virginia; one sister, Barbara Lutz of Charlestown, Indiana; nine grandchildren: Emily Goins of Hanover, Indiana and Alysa Goins of Columbus, Indiana;  Amy Noble and her husband, Ben, Katherine Roberts and her husband, Chris, Anna Smilinskas and her husband, Vilius, and Daniel Goins, all of Orlando; Justin Goins and his wife, Erin, Amanda Beaty and her husband, Dustin, and Tyler Goins and his wife, Lindsey, all of Lynchburg; ten great-grandchildren:  Ivy and Felix Noble, Keith and Emily Marie Roberts, Tomas Smilinskas, Owen, Leo and Rosalie Beaty, and Beckett and Sebastian Goins; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her father on October 20, 1980; her mother on October 25, 1985; two brothers:  Jim Royce on August 25, 2015 and Don Royce on March 29, 2020; one sister-in-law, Martha (Shipley) Royce on July 10, 2014; one brother-in-law, Reverend Robert Lutz on April 22, 2016; two nieces: Peggy (Royce) Crank on May 11, 2007 and Pamela (Lutz) Moser on April 27, 2018; and one great-nephew, Dakota Lutz on July 17, 2016.

Due to the restrictions of the COVID-19 pandemic, private services will be held.   A public funeral will be held at a later date and will be announced.

The family requests memorial contributions be made to the Madison First Baptist Church Stained Glass Window Fund.
