Joan E. Deaton

Joan E. (Fox) Deaton, age 62 of Seymour passed away at 2:45pm Sunday, February 17th at her home surrounded by her family. Born September 17, 1950 in Seymour, she was the daughter of Ralph R. and Alma F. (Skirvin) Fox. On July 24, 1975 in Seymour, she married Chester Deaton. Joan studied dietary management at North Lawrence Vocation School and used that degree as she worked as a dietary manager 10 years at Hoosier Christian Village and for 12 years at the Columbus Convalescent Center. She also owned and operated the Kurtz Mini Mart for 3 years followed by the Reddington Grocery, where she retired after 10 years. Joan was a longtime member of the Seymour Community Church and was a member of the Jackson County Spurs and Wheels Saddle Club. Survivors include her husband Chester, her mother Alma and her children: James (Ginger) Deaton, Bradley Deaton, Bobby (Angie) Petro, Lori Lea Deaton, Sonni (George Altepeter) Rogers all of Seymour and Jera Sue (Casey) Shelton of Kentucky; a daughter in law, Melanie VanCleve of Hayden; a sister, Pamela (Jim) Browning of Brownstown; Grandchildren: Rikki Deaton, James Deaton, Matthew Deaton, Tevis Deaton, Jonathan Deaton, Shane Fox, Natasha (Sebastian) Perez, Heidi Cole and Ruth Shultz; Great grandchildren: Phillip, Malachiah, Eli, Aiden, Alley, Isaac, Isaiah, Izabel, Katherine, Adrianne, Aiden, Brooklinn Elaina and Tucker. Joan was preceded in death by her father, grandsons Logan and Nicholas Petro and a daughter in law, Kathy Hampton. Brother Tim Douglas will conduct a funeral service will be at 7pm at the Seymour Community Church, located at 1023 North Obrien Street, at 7:00pm on Wednesday, February 20th. Visitation will be 4:00pm until 7:00pm at the church. A private graveside service will be held 11:00am Thursday at the Reddington Cemetery.
