James A. Demaree

James A. Demaree, age 80 of Madison, passed away at 7:05pm on Friday, August 23, 2013 at his home. Born July 27, 1933, in Madison, he was the son of James E. and Mildred L. (Augustine) Demaree. On December 27, 1953 at the Trinity United Methodist Church in Madison, he married Ruth Ann Sauley who passed on April 8, 2012. Jim retired from the Jefferson Proving Ground as a proof director in 1994 after 20 years and also owned and operated the Demaree’s Mens Shop in downtown Madison from the mid 50’s until 1976 when the business suffered a fire. He was a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and was also a 50year member of the Masonic Union Lodge No. 2, F.& A.M. in Madison as well as the Elks Lodge. Jim was also active in the Downtown Merchants Association, Madison City Planning Commission and was on the board for the Jefferson Proving Ground Credit Union. He also served as a volunteer fireman for Clifty 6 in Madison. Jim enjoyed doing oil painting, golfing, fishing, hunting and traveling. He was also an avid photographer and enjoying taking pictures of wildlife and nature. Survivors include his daughter, Deborah Whorley of Greenwood, Indiana; two sons, Greg (Cathy) Demaree of Foley, AL and Andy Demaree of Madison. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Jessica (Brad) Lewallen, Kyle Whorley and Tyler Demaree. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, wife and a sister, Janet Middleton. Pastor Bob Hicks will conduct services at 2:00pm Wednesday, August 28th at the Vail Funeral Chapel at 117 Holt Drive in Madison. Visitation will be from 12:00pm until service time Wednesday. Burial will follow in Springdale Cemetery with full military rites. Memorials can be made to the Leukemia Foundation in care of the funeral home.
