George Melvin Gasaway, age 78, of Seymour, passed away on Monday, November 28, 2016 in the home of his daughter.
Born May 21, 1938, he was the second son of Clarence Paul and Mildred (McElfresh) Gasaway.
He is survived by three daughters: Natalie Phillips, Abbie Frank, and Jolinda Phillips; and five sons: Nathan Gasaway, Aaron (Charmaine) Gasaway, Jason (Susanti) Gasaway, Shaun (Gina) Gasaway, and Shannon (Courtney) Gasaway. George was also blessed with 28 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren and many nephews and nieces and a dear friend Shari Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three siblings: Max Eugene Gasaway, Betty (Gasaway) Hall, and Brenda Gasaway.
Born and raised in Seymour, Indiana, George would spend his whole life in the area. He was a regular fixture at several restaurants where he would show up like clockwork for coffee and conversation.
Lighthearted and carefree, George did not take the complications of life too seriously; his sense of humor was always present and he was primed for laughter.
George was a man of faith and left behind a legacy of simple trust in God. He would often recall in detail the many times God had miraculously intervened in his life. His prayers and trust in God are ingrained in the hearts of his children.
An entrepreneur at core, George loved to buy, sell and trade. He was always hunting for a bargain or deal and simply enjoyed the art of transacting business.
George loved nature and was an avid fisherman and hunter, and if the animals weren't on the menu, he could sometimes be found at the park feeding them.
He especially loved babies, and he would throw dignity to the wind in order to entertain them. He bloomed with joy when they would crack a smile or when they erupted in laughter. His childlike attitude was a perfect match for their innocent wonder.
These many memorable attributes will be missed, but they will continue to shine brightly in the minds of all who encountered him, and the light of faith that he reflected will endure and help to germinate the many seeds he planted in the hearts of others.
Visitation for George will be held on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Woodlawn Family Funeral Centre at 311 Holiday Square Rd, Seymour, Indiana 47274.
Services will be conducted by Revs. Larry Robbins & Gary Dyer on Friday at 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow services at Riverview Cemetery.
Memorials can be made at the funeral home to the George Gasaway Memorial Fund.
