Donald Gerth, a cherished figure to many, passed away on December 14, 2024, in Seymour, Indiana, at the age of 73. Born on September 14, 1951, in Seymour, Indiana, Donald led a life that embodied resilience, warmth, and an unwavering spirit.
A proud graduate of Jennings County High School in 1969, Donald dedicated his career to construction and carpentry. His strong-willed nature and keen eye for detail allowed him to master these crafts, leaving a legacy of skilled work that will be remembered by those who knew him. Donald was known to approach every project with a unique blend of professionalism and a lighthearted touch, often revealing his character through humor that was both dry and endearing.
Family was at the heart of Donald's life. He leaves behind his beloved son, Donald J. Gerth, and wife Jill, as well as his devoted daughter Traci Johnson and husband Shawn, both residing in Seymour, Indiana. His daughter, Jill Ann Gerth, resides in Jeffersonville, Indiana. The bond he shared with his family was immeasurable, and he found immense joy in being a father and grandfather, lighting up at the sight of his eleven grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. Each child brought a twinkle to his eye, exemplifying the love and pride he held for his family.
Donald was a man who never met a stranger; his kind and welcoming demeanor drew people in, making everyone feel like a valued friend. His Christian faith provided him with strength and purpose throughout his life, especially as he faced the challenges that came with being an amputee. Embracing this adversity gave him a profound appreciation for life—a testament to his resilience that inspired many around him.
In the peaceful moments of his life, Donald immersed himself in hobbies he adored. His love for woodworking brought tranquility and fulfillment, often found in his workshop creating pieces that reflected his skill and passion. Additionally, he was an avid fan of NASCAR and IU Men's Basketball, always thrilled to share a game with friends and family, exchanging banter and laughter that filled the air with joy.
Donald is survived by his loving siblings, Walter Gerth and wife Wilma, of North Vernon, Indiana; Pete Gerth, of North Vernon, Indiana; and Carol Elam, of Columbus, Indiana. Each shared memories and laughter with him, ensuring that his spirit lives on within them.
He is preceded in death by his father, Cecil Gerth; mother, Apphia (Woeher) Gerth; son, Robert "Bobby" Gerth; and siblings Ralph Gerth, Dale Gerth, Jerry Gerth, Louis Gerth, Rick Berth, Helen McCulley, and Alice West. Their love and memories will forever remain with Donald's family as a source of comfort during this difficult time.
There will be a celebration of life on Thursday, December 19, 2024, at Genesis Church in Seymour Indiana from 6:00 PM until 7:00 PM.
