Betty J. Barnes, age 72 of Madison, passed away on Sunday, January 12, 2014 at her son’s home with him and his wife by her side. Born December 6, 1941 in Mulberry, Ohio, she was the daughter of Theodore Charles and Lydia Brooks (Whisman) Hamm. Raised in Ohio, Betty moved to Jefferson County at the age of 15. She retired from Grote Industries after 36 ½ years and had worked at Kings Daughter Hospital as a dietician. She attended North Madison Baptist Church. Betty enjoyed to read, crochet, socialize with her friends and spending time with her grandchildren. Betty is survived by a son, Charles William “Chuck” Barnes and his wife Margie of Madison; two daughters, Deirdra Kathleen Monday and her husband Scott of Hanover and Lisa Schafer and her husband Tony of Madison. Betty is also survived by four brothers, Donald (Kay) Hamm, Jackie Hamm, Ronnie Cristopher, Donnie Hamm and Chris Hamm; a sister, Bonnie (Jerry) Waterson; 14 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews. Per Betty’s request, there will be no service and cremation has been chosen. Woodlawn-Vail Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with the arrangements. The family would like to thank Kings Daughters Hospital Hospice and ask that those wishing to make a donation in memory of Betty to be directed to the hospice in care of the funeral home.
